Get to Know: Surbhi Sheth-Shah

I started my college counseling practice to address the growing need for individualized attention for high-school students preparing for their college admissions process.

As a proud parent of two successful college-bound children, I know how stressful these years were at times in our home. With so much information from our high school, from the colleges, and on the Internet, my husband and I, like any other parents, felt overwhelmed and confused. We tried hard to filter all this information down to what really applied to our children. We tried hard to help them without nagging them!

Our successful experience and my desire to reduce this overwhelming stress for parents and students convinced me to take college counseling up on a professional basis. I went back to school to UC Berkeley, and got certified in College Admissions and Career Planning. Now, on an ongoing basis, I visit colleges and talk to the admissions officers to understand what they are looking for in their applicants. I continue to attend counseling industry seminars to learn the best practices for this unique professional practice.

My hope is to make the college application process goal-oriented and less stressful for the students. After an initial information gathering meeting, based on when they start with me, I identify several summer programs and colleges for my students that match their aptitude, interests, abilities, and where they will be happy and successful. I work with them to make their application stand out in the crowd with their personal story. I am my student’s advocate in this process.

I have been a parent volunteer at the Career Center of Lynbrook High School (San Jose CA) and also volunteer as a mentor at College Track, a non-profit college prep program aimed at first-generation and under-resourced communities.

I have over 20 years of high-tech industry experience working in several Fortune 500 companies in multiple geographies. I also have an MBA from University of North Carolina. I use my professional experience to help students plan and stay organized during their high school years. I have traveled all over the world, to over 200 cities in 30+ countries and bring global experience.
